Common Dental Issues for Children

Your child is susceptible to many of the same tooth ailments adults get, but they may not be as good at identifying the problem. Here are some common symptoms to look out for in your child.

Painful Teeth
Pain in the mouth can hint at a number of problems, including cavities. Cavities are mostly preventable with being conscious of what you are eating, and making sure to brush your teeth after eating sugary foods and drinks like cookies and soft drinks. Even drinks that are healthy like fruit juices are loaded in sugar and can cause problems.

Hot or Cold Sensitivity
Poor brushing and flossing habits can lead to the demineralization of enamel and leave parts of the teeth usually covered by healthy enamel vulnerable to decay. The enamel is like armor it keeps our teeth healthy when it breaks down it can leave the tooth exposed to whatever your child is eating and drinking. It can get so bad that it may start to cause pain. If your child is suffering from tooth pain or symptoms of tooth decay, give us a call for a checkup.

Bad Breath
While bad breath can be a symptom of a medical issue, it can also be caused by food being left in the mouth due to poor brushing and flossing. Bad breath after eating a particularly pungent food like garlic is perfectly normal, it’s causing to worry when it becomes a persistent problem. Ruling out dental decay is important.

The good news is, these are all very treatable conditions. When in doubt, give the office a call and we can advise you your best steps.

We’ve had 2 visits at this office for my 2 year old. Both visits have been during the pandemic. This office is so clean and I’ve never had to share a waiting room with anyone. Wait times have been less than 10 minutes. Dr. Gallo is so wonderful. Their expertise and professionalism is outstanding. Everyone that works in the office is friendly and great with kids.

Southwoods consistently exceeds my expectations. They are kind and courteous, and always help my children develop better habit with brushing and flossing. They take thier time, and the quality of the service really comes through with each visit. I have now been using Southwoods for over a year, and won't be moving to another pediatric dentist anytime soon. These guys are awesome, thier facilities are clean, and organized and most importantly everything is kid friendly.

We had an urgent situation with our 2-year-old. They squeezed us in same-day and they were simply wonderful with her! They put on her favorite show to watch during the exam and gave her lots of little prizes for being good. Highly recommend!
